The City of Colwood invites you to paint en plein air on September 17th in the 2nd Annual “Paint-in at the Fort” at Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic sites.

Help celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary as you enjoy the exhilarating challenge of selecting one of several unique national historic site locations, then completing a painting within a 3-hour time frame. Completed artwork will be judged at the festival and showcased as part of the Canada 150 exhibit at the Coast Collective Art Centre, October 4-15, 2017. Both experienced and emerging artists are encouraged to register.

To add to the richness of the day’s scenery, the Colwood Seaside Festival will include horse drawn carriage rides, live entertainment/activities, and historic costumes. Whether you enjoy painting landscapes, seascapes, architecture or people, there will be something for you when you join us for the Paint-in at the Fort!

Registration: Pre-registration is required, at a cost of $10.00 per artist to participate. The event is limited to 30 artists. Registration closes Friday, September 8, 2017 at 5:00 p.m. Painters can sign-up online through the West Shore Arts Council (, in person at the Coast Collective Art Centre (Open Wednesday to Sunday, 11am to 5pm), and by mail. Prizes: A panel of judges will award prizes for1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. A People’s Choice Award will also be selected by our festival attendees on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at 3:00 p.m.

Media & Materials: Artists will supply all their own materials necessary to complete their work, such as their preferred substrate (canvas, panel, paper), paint, water, brushes, easels, chairs and or sun/shade umbrellas. Artists are responsible for providing framing and wiring their artwork for hanging. Finished edge canvases that do not require fames are acceptable. All mediums accepted, provided they are completed for exhibition within the allocated three-hour time fraSeveral painting locations will be identified at the National Historic Site to enable members of the public to observe the creative process (i.e., Garry Oak Learning Meadow, Mid-Field in the midst of people, entertainment and activities, with a background of the lighthouse and Olympic Mountains, Fisgard Lighthouse and foreshore, Lower Battery, etc.). Set up can take place before the11:00 a.m. start time.

  • All painting must be completed 100% “en plein air” during the competition.
  • Substrates must be stamped at the check-in on September 17, 2017, in order to qualify.
  • Set up of location can take place before the official start at 11:00 a.m.
  • Artists must provide all materials to complete the work and all framing and wiring to exhibit the work (see Materials section on Page 1).
  • Artists will be asked to fill out a form, providing the title of the work, artist’s name, media and price, when the painting is submitted at the end of the competition.
  • The City of Colwood reserves the right to use images taken of the artist in the field, or of their work (in progress and/or completed) in promoting the competition and associated gallery exhibition in current and subsequent years.
  • Artists agree to contribute 50% of the sales price of their paint-in painting to support community arts, culture and heritage programs and events through the City of Colwood.
  • Any sales of artwork during the Canada 150 Exhibition will be done through the Coast Collective Art Centre. Payment to the artist for work sold will be the responsibility of the Coast Collective following the gallery exhibition, and at the close of their accounting month.
  • The City of Colwood reserves the right to disqualify works deemed objectionable, or if the work does not adhere the rules and guidelines of the competition.

The artist recognizes and agrees that neither the City of Colwood nor any individual or entity associated with the City, Government of Canada, or the Coast Collective Art Centre (Society for Arts on the South Island) can be held responsible for any loss, theft or damage to any artwork and/or personal property that may occur in connection with the festival or subsequent gallery exhibition, nor for any injuries of any kind that may occur in the connection with the Colwood Seaside Festival/Paint-in at the Fort or Canada 150 Exhibition at the Coast Collective Art Centre.
