The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra 2017-2018 season opens with celebratory concerts October 28 and 29 to launch the orchestra's 20th anniversary year. Music Director Norman Nelson has planned an exciting program with two works by Ludwig Beethoven and one by Edward Elgar. Maestro Nelson invites all who enjoy classical music to join in the celebration.
The talented winner of the 2017 Don Chrysler Concerto Concert Competition, Sophie van der Sloot, highlights the program. She will reprise her award-winning performance of Elgar's Cello Concerto, Op 85 in E minor. This was Elgar's last notable work and was composed in 1919. As Sophie's performance at last April's competition testifies, the young cellist has the skills to meet the challenge of this complex piece. She studies cello at the Victoria Conservatory of Music.
