Sooke Philharmonic performs a Summer Symphony

Sooke and West Shore residents once again have the exceptional opportunity to experience live classical music in their “own backyard”. The Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra (SPO), under the direction of Music Director and Conductor Yariv Aloni, performs June 9 in Sooke and June 10 in Langford.  The West Shore Arts Council is the Title Sponsor for the Langford concert.

The program — a Summer Symphony —features Carl Nielsen’s ebullient Maskarade Overture, Joseph Haydn’s Oboe Concerto in C and one of the orchestra’s favourites, Brahms Symphony No. 2 Opus 73 in D.  The Haydn piece showcases the soulful capabilities of the oboe, played by guest soloist Russell Bajer, a member of the Victoria Symphony.

The SPO offers FREE concert admission to youth and children under 16, making attendance a unique and affordable family outing.  Hearing first hand great music from the past centuries, played with skill and obvious joy, encourages young people to expand their musical interests and tastes and to begin a life-long appreciation of the classics.

Otherwise, ticket prices are $20 seniors and $25 adults

A Summer Symphony is the fifth concert of the SPO’s successful 2017-2018 season, marking the Orchestra’s 20th anniversary year.   This 20-year record of continuous performances is a tribute to the dedication of the musicians and Music Directors and to the enthusiastic regional audience appreciation of their efforts.

Yariv Aloni, well-known in the greater Victoria area as a violist and conductor, has recently taken on the role of SPO Music Director after the recent death of Norman Nelson, the orchestra’s legendary founder.   He brings 30 years experience conducting community orchestras in the region.

Performances are scheduled for Saturday June 9, 7:30 pm at the Sooke Community Hall, Sooke and Sunday June 10, 7:30 pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Hall, Langford.
