Casting Shadows

I have a little shadow that goes in and out with me,
And what can be the use of him is more than I can see.
He is very, very like me from the heels up to the head;
And I see him jump before me, when I jump into my bed.

Robert Louis Stevenson

And now for a little science: shadows need two things to form, Light, and an Object that does not allow light to pass through.  Light, which can only travel in a straight line, will then go sideways and, voilà, a shadow is formed.

Casting Shadows, an open-call show, is a brand-new theme for Coast Collective Gallery.  Twenty-seven artists have submitted works that shine a light upon shadows – paintings, photographs, sculptures, textiles, mixed media, and even a lamp made from upcycled automotive parts.

This show runs from February 27th to March 10th with the Meet-the-Artists Reception on Saturday, March 2nd from 1 to 3.  C’mon – no need to be afraid of your own shadow.

Operated by the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), whose mission statement is to nurture British Columbia arts and culture … through the production and support of showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, public performances, and special community cultural events, Coast Collective is delighted to host this event.
