Robert has been involved in music since his school days. His parents encouraged him to take up the trumpet, but Robert noticed that his father tended to leave the house "for a walk" when Robert practised.
After school he traded trumpet for French horn, playing for many years with the Greater Victoria Concert Band. He was an early member of the Westshore Community Concert Band; he has now swapped his French horn for a string bass, and takes weekly lessons to improve his technique.
Robert also enjoys playing alto horn with the Victoria Brass Band.
At home, he professes to obey the dictates of his wife of 35 years.
