The Salt Spring National Art Prize: A national juried show demonstrating excellence in Canadian art

The Salt Spring National Art Prize Newsletter, November 3, 2017

49 Artists were chosen from across Canada by an independent jury for the Finalist Exhibition. All artist submissions were anonymous to the jury.

SSNAP gave awards totalling $30,000 to the following recipients;

THE SALT SPRING PRIZE (JOAN McCONNELL AWARD): $17,000 ($12,000 and a $5,000 Salt Spring Island artist residency)
Judy Anderson Calgary, Alberta, for "This one brings me the most pride…”

THE STEPHEN P ROBERTS JURORS' CHOICE AWARDS;
three awards of $2,000 selected by each juror;

WINNER | JUROR’S CHOICE AWARD – JUROR, DAVID GARNEAU – $2,000
Jan Little, Kaleden, British Columbia, for "Jael Suddenly Found Herself With That Beard She'd Long Dreamt Of”

WINNER | JUROR’S CHOICE AWARD – JUROR, NAOMI POTTER – $2,000
Katherine MacNeill, Oliver, British Columbia, for "Offroad East of Oyama BC”

WINNER | JUROR’S CHOICE AWARD – JUROR, DENIS LONGCHAMPS – $2,000
Diana Thorneycroft, Winnipeg Manitoba, for "Guard on the Edge (of the forest and the night)"

THE ROSEMARIA BEHNCKE PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS determined by a vote of visitors to the exhibition:

1st Prize of $3,000
WINNER | PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD, 1ST PRIZE – $3,000
Garry Kaye, Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, for “Roadside"

2nd Prize of $2,000
WINNER | 2ND PRIZE, PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARDS

3rd Prize of $1,000

THE ASA (Alliance of Salt Spring Artists) AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING SALT SPRING ARTIST; $1,000

SSNAP winners’ exhibition at the Bau-Xi Gallery Vancouver

The seven winning works of the 2017 Salt Spring National Art Prize will travel to Vancouver for an exhibition at the prestigious Bau-Xi Gallery. Information found here; https://bau-xi.com/collections/2017-ssnap-winners.

The exhibition – in the front upper gallery room – opens on Saturday November 4th, and runs until Saturday November 18th.

It runs concurrently with an exhibition of Sylvia Tait’s new abstract paintings on the main floor. There will be an opening reception for both exhibitions on Saturday November 4th from 2-4 PM.
