Event Combines Art, Music, and Family Entertainment

Winter Sounds a First for the West Shore Arts Council

Goldstream News Gazette - Rick Stiebel, December 6, 2017

Winter Sounds at the Westin brings together arts, music and entertainment as a great way to usher in the holiday season.

The event takes a unique approach to combining all the facets of arts engagement with music and vocal and theatre performances, said Laura Davis, president of the West Shore Arts Council.

“We have quite a selection of talented musicians and artists entertaining throughout the afternoon.”

The event, presented by the West Shore Arts Council and the Westin Bear Mountain golf resort and spa, runs from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 10.

It gets underway with the Christmas tree light-up in the Westin’s lobby at 2 p.m., with musical accompaniment by the Pacific Edge Chorus, an all female group of a capella singers. The group will also perform every half hour near the fireplace in the Westin’s lobby.

The Sooke Philharmonic String Quartet and a live demonstration by an artist from the Coast Collective Arts Centre will provide entertainment for people on the way to the ballroom, where the rest of the event will unfold.

Members of the Four Seasons Musical Theatre will be on hand to perform short, Christmas-themed presentations every 30 minutes, beginning at 2:45 in the ballroom.

“It’s a great way for the whole family to enjoy a free afternoon of entertainment to welcome in the Christmas season,” Davis noted.

If you’re looking for a special Christmas gift, Davis suggests checking out the selection of handcrafted items for sale made by indigenous artists from the M’akola Group of Societies.

“One of the artisans, Christine Aday, does unique bead and leather work using traditional materials,” she said.

There’s also a draw for an original painting by acclaimed artist Linda Anderson.

Coffee, tea, cocoa and spiced cider will be available.
