West Shore Arts Council series showcase a composer and filmmaker

Goldstream News Gazette, August 8, 2018

Have you ever wondered what goes into an opera? This Thursday, Aug. 9, composer Gavin Bryars will speak about and show excerpts from a number of projects, including his new opera The Collected Works of Billy the Kid, which won top prize for the best production in the Armel Opera Festival in Budapest. Other pieces include two ballets and a concert involving Irish schoolchildren.

The speaker series, presented by the West Shore Arts Council, takes place at Metchosin Community House, 4430 Happy Valley Rd.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, filmmaker Anna Tchernakova will discuss her latest work. She has been working throughout the year in Russia on a new film based on a story set in 1911 and 1931 about children by the Russian author Mikhail Zoschenko. She'll talk about the production and will even show some clips of the work in progress.

The events start at 7:15 p.m., are open to everyone and admission is free. For more information go to westshorearts.org.
