Art in the Neighbourhood

Call for Submissions

artBiin and the WSAC are leading a project to promote local artists and placemaking throughout the West Shore communities. Building upon the success of the WSAC’s 2023 mural mosaic project, we are continuing to support community art set within the stunning landscapes of the place we call home.

Inspired by the idea of experiencing art in unexpected places, Art in the Neighbourhood will result in the creation of 5 large-scale panels featuring artwork by West Shore artists, set within the magical views and sprawling vistas of Southern Vancouver Island. The project will take the gallery outside as paintings, drawings and 2D representations of the landscape come to life.

Sample Conceptual Renderings

The above images are shown to illustrate how the final panels will be “integrated” into the landscape, as if the artwork is a continuation of the background scenery. The final panels will look different than this, however it’s our intention to give a visual example of what the final artwork will look like.
The final panels will vary based on location, artwork and building considerations.

Submission Guidelines
The curatorial team invites submissions from emerging and established artists living and working in the West Shore communities on Vancouver Island. Artists may submit up to 2 pieces for consideration.

We invite the following works:

  • Painting, drawing, creative photography*, collage, etc. in 2-dimensional format
*Creative photography may be any image that showcases a landscape in an interesting way and is not a 100% visual direct reproduction of the chosen view (ie. may be black and white or colourized, may be photoshopped or digitally enhanced)
  • Works may be any size and able to be photographed in-person in Victoria
  • Showcase a real landscape in a West Shore community in a unique way
  • Landscapes must be publicly accessible, but may be on public or private property (ex. on a publicly-accessible, privately-owned farm or tourist attraction or in a public park)

Evaluation Criteria
Submissions will be evaluated with consideration to the following criteria:

  • Artistic expression and technical execution
  • Written submission and personal connection to the chosen subject
  • Artwork visual connection to the landscape (the artwork must bear some semblance to the real landscape represented)
  • Feasibility of location for public installation

Selected artists will receive an honoraria of $250.00, as well as professional photography of their finished panel in situ.  Artists will be invited to attend a launch event with the WSAC and invited guests.
