Part II:  3:00  – 4:00 pm, BC Fiddle Orchestra Dance

Join Daniel Lapp and his BC Fiddle Orchestra’s Old-Time Dance Orchestra, for an afternoon of traditional old-time fiddle music, and dance with none other than the master fiddler himself calling the dances!

The BCFO’s Old-Time Dance Orchestra is comprised of teen age youth, performing on fiddle, as well as with their own “back-line” of keyboard, drums, bass, and guitar. Now based out of the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where Daniel Lapp was appointed as the inaugural Artistic Director of the VCM’s new Chwyl Family School of Contemporary Music, the Old-Time Orchestra is firmly rooted in Canadian Old-Time dance music, and plays for dances during the year as they learn all about our rich Canadian fiddle history.

The BC Fiddle Orchestra began with a small group of talented and enthusiastic young violinists from Daniel Lapp’s studio. The first performance, in 1994, was at the Opening Ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in front of 60,000 people. The BCFO has gone on to perform at numerous festivals and ceremonies throughout the province, and is a one of the most central programs offered through the Victoria Conservatory of Music today.  Dozens of young fiddlers, many of whom are now professional musicians, have learned the “art of fiddling” during their apprenticeship with the BCFO which exposes students to styles and genres from around the world. Founder and director Daniel Lapp has travelled the globe learning tunes from great masters and is himself considered a Canadian fiddle icon. Daniel was awarded the Canadian Folk Music Innovator Award in 2013 for his mentorship of young fiddlers.

The performance at the Highlands Community Hall on Sunday September 9, starts at 2 pm with a 45 minute set of traditional fiddle tunes led by Daniel Lapp.  Following the intermission, audience members will have their opportunity to participate in an authentic Old-Time Dance, called by Daniel himself, and accompanied by the BCFO Old-Time Dance Orchestra.
