“Transmutations & The Water Story of Reflections” by Ann K. Chou

Animal-shaped lantern characters travel, transform, and gather new stories.

Made from mulberry paper, reclaimed fabrics, plastics, organic debris, and remnants of unfinished work, these modular lanterns have travelled with me by ferry, transit, along the seawall, and on foot. Some have been reassembled into different forms for different places. The Pony is a new character, joining the Feminist Dragon Boat, Storytelling Rabbit Mother, Turtle, Owl, and Dragon Head.

Growing from my 2025 Eco-Illuminescence exhibition at Xchanges Gallery, this work continues my exploration of visual art and performance, and my lifelong interest in accessibility and non-verbal communication.

In the second week, two light and shadow play activations will bring the lantern characters into poetic, improvised moments of revealing. Through Reverse Captioning, visual cues can suggest wind, rain, and other sounds—creating a bridge between different ways of sensing.
